Hôtel-Dieu - Hospices de Beaune - Exposition "Œuvres de miséricorde"

As part of its 2023 cultural programme dedicated to the theme of HOSPITALITY, the Hôtel-Dieu presents the exhibition "Works of Mercy" from 1 January to 31 December.

By building and fitting out the Hôtel-Dieu, by endowing it with an annual and perpetual annuity of one thousand pounds, by instituting a daily distribution of bread for the needy, by appointing two priests for the celebration of divine service, by creating a community of women to govern and serve the poor, the founders exercised works of mercy. These charitable actions towards the poor are both corporal and spiritual: they ensure the salvation of the benefactors who treat the poor as lords.

On the tour, you will discover the beds of the patients, their pewter tableware, medical instruments, paintings and sculptures, furniture including clothing chests, sumptuous bed covers made of tapestry with the arms of Guigone de Salins, books of hours, and archive documents illustrating the commitment of all the donors of the Hôtel-Dieu who continued the work of the founders and carried out the works of mercy in each period.
