Situated in the heart of Burgundy, the château stands out for the quality of its architecture (Medieval, Renaissance and 17th century), the originality of its interior decoration designed by Count Roger de Bussy-Rabutin and its formal gardens set in a 34-hectare estate that is a delight to stroll around.
A mischievous courtier of the Sun King, cousin of Madame de Sévigné, grand officer in the King's armies and a writer of genius, it was one of his pamphlets, Histoire Amoureuse des Gaules, that was to bring about his downfall: under the guise of mocking the adventures of the ladies of the Court, he produced a critique of aristocratic society and its debauched ways. The book soon got out of hand. The king sentenced him to a year's imprisonment in the Bastille, then to permanent exile in Burgundy, where he set about creating a set evoking his nostalgia for the Court and his feelings about it.
Inside his home, the Count painted a highly caustic fresco of his era and the Court of Versailles, with fantasy and impertinence.
A colourful Burgundian at the King's Court, a skilled soldier, a libertine, a gallant gentleman, an academician: discover one of the most flamboyant courtiers of the great Louis XIV and a unique insight into the life of a nobleman in the 17th century.
Then continue your tour in the restored flats of the Counts of Sarcus: discover a little-known part of the history of the monument and enter into the intimacy of an aristocratic family in the 19th century.
Guided tours are available during the school holidays (All Saints' Day, Christmas, Winter) and from 1 April to 31 May at 10.15am and 2.30pm.
From 1 June to 30 September, guided tours are available at 10.30am, 2.30pm and 3.30pm.
