Following on from *Croire aux fauves*, which explored the recovery of a woman who had been bitten by a bear, Émilie Faucheux now turns her attention to the scars of childhood, set within a household where violence is hushed up.
We follow the narrator from the age of 3 to 27; we do not know her first name. She speaks in the first person and, with passion, anger, a thirst for freedom and a great deal of self-deprecation, seeks to invent her own words to better express what she feels amidst her mother’s screams and her father’s silences. The domestic abuse she endures is not visible, and even when she tries to send out a few signals, no one seems to take any notice. As she grows up, she finds refuge in mathematics and its relentless logic… Except that life cannot be reduced to a simple equation; when the past resurfaces, one must inevitably confront it.
A story of emancipation in both form and content, *Tumeur ou tutu*, with its unique and ironically tinged language, has the effect of a euphoric explosion.
