G. Verdi's Requiem is a dramatic, powerful and deeply expressive work, combining operatic grandeur with religious solemnity, and remains a masterpiece of the world choral repertoire.
This Requiem, an emblematic musical work, is composed as a funeral mass for four soloists, double choir and orchestra. It was written in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, a figure whom Verdi deeply admired, which is why it is also known as the Manzoni Requiem.
At its inception, some critics felt that Verdi's style was too operatic for a religious work, but the work quickly gained in popularity.
It has been performed in several major European venues, including La Scala, and remains one of the most frequently performed choral works since Mozart.
