At the crossroads of two popular works, the play In the Light of Les Misérables explores the plight of children, whether they are from France or elsewhere.
The story opens with a young street vendor lying in the snow, her last match in her hand. A street child approaches her, realises she is still breathing and manages to bring her back to life. Between the boy, who bears a resemblance to Gavroche, and the little girl – a young refugee from the East – a friendship blossoms, built on confidences that will eventually reveal the saviour’s true identity.
Guided by a storyteller, two graceful characters, who seem to glide across the snow, recount the unexpected encounter between children who were initially destined for death, yet determined to take control of their own fate. Even if it means escaping from their respective books without their authors’ knowledge!
